Mark was born on June 28, 1972 in Freeport, Grand Bahama.
He attended St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He is a four-time Florida high school state singles champion and three-time doubles winner. The University of Florida was his choice for college with a major in Elementary Education. Mark turned pro in 1994 and resides in Gainesville, Florida.
In 1993, Mark won the NCAA doubles title. He was named to the 1993-94 Rolex Collegiate All-Star team and won the NCAA singles title in May 1994. Historically, he became the first man from Florida to win the NCAA singles crown. He played for the University of Florida for four years, winning four-time All-America honours in singles and doubles in his final two years at the school. He is the all-time leader in Florida history.
Mark Merklein

Mark participated in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and the 2000 Sydney Olympics with Mark Knowles as his doubles partner. He is also a member of the Bahamas Davis Cup team.
This year, he won a doubles tournament in Munich and was a semifinalist in St. Poelten, Newport, and Adelaide (each time with various partners).
Mark loves to surf, play golf and basketball when he is not on tour.
